Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT)

Updated: 03/01/2019

A strip of scalp is removed under local anesthesia, the wound is then sutured back together and this piece of scalp tissue is then cut in to small pieces of tissue called grafts which are then transplanted back in to the thinning area of the patient’s head. This method will leave a linear scar in the donor area, which should be covered by a patient’s hair (if long). The recovery period is around 2 weeks and will require the stitches to be removed by medical personnel.

This method which is also termed as strip harvesting served as the major hair transplantation method prior to the rapid developments accomplished in the Follicular Unit Extraction – FUE Method

FUT method differs from the FUE method in the process of hair removal from the donour site (2). The rest of the stages (1,3,4) are the same as the FUE method. In other words, the main difference between the two methods is the way the hair grafts are removed

Now let us see the respective stages of the FUT method :
1- Local Anaesthesia and Sedation
2- Removal of Hair Grafts from the Donour Site
a) Removal of the Flap of Predetermined Length and Width from the Donour Site
b) Suturing the Region the Flap is Extracted
c) Dissection of the Flap Removed into the Follicular Units(The Grafts)
3- Microchannel Development in the Recipient Site
4- Implantation of the Grafts
